In use for construction since 4000 BC, bricks are still going strong. It’s their durability and longevity that makes them so popular. However, they can cause cracks in walls with time or because of unprofessional masonry work or poor maintenance.
Here we share six useful tips you can follow during construction to prevent cracks in brick walls.
Ensure good masonry work
A building stands tall and robust only when its foundation is strong. Similarly, if the masonry work isn’t right, your wall won’t last long, no matter how much maintenance you do or preventive measures you take. So ensure your brick wall is aligned and leveled correctly.
Use quality materials
The quality of materials you use plays a vital role in determining your brick wall’s longevity. The water used during construction should have a pH balance ranging between 6.5–8.5. The bricks should not have any alkali content, and the proportion of cement and concrete/sand should be correct. If you ignore any of these things, it will lead to cracks in the walls eventually.
Use expansion joints
Bricks, like every other material, are affected by a change in temperature and moisture. They expand and contract according to weather conditions. When they do and don’t find the space to adjust, cracks develop. Expansion joints can fix this issue; they separate the bricks into small segments that remain unaffected no matter the weather, temperature, or moisture levels.
Give the frame time to deform
When building an RCC structure, delay erecting the frame for as long as possible to give it time to deform during structural loads. If it’s not allowed some time to rest, and the structure is made to stand right after construction, it will develop cracks.
Leave a gap between the ceiling and the wall
When building a wall, ensure that there is some space between it and the ceiling. You must fill this space with irrepressible material (non-shrink grouts) to avoid cracks. It will deflect any load on the roof and not let it affect your walls.
Ensure that the foundation is strong
Sometimes, the floor on which the wall is built deflects under the structure’s weight. It leads to cracks in walls. To prevent it, ensure that the foundation is strong. Also, add a horizontal reinforcement to your brick wall so it can handle itself even if the floor deflects because of some reason.
